52 Week Challenge – Weeks 1-4

Well now that January is almost over I have completed 4 weeks of my 52 week photography challenge. For these first 4 weeks I have focused my attention on still life photography. With each week I have photographed an object in different styles challenging myself to do the same genre of photography but in 4 different ways.

Week 1's photo I have already talked about in detail in my post entitled: A New Year, A New Challenge. Here I talked about this challenge in general and my photography for the first week. That style is more of an in-movement portrait-esque photo of […]

Carnevale in Venice!

Now that it is towards the end of January, in Europe carnival season is about to begin. Living in Italy for nearly 4 years and being in close proximity to Venice, gave me a chance to see Carnevale at it's best. If anybody is around Venice during this season you should definitely give it a go. Venice is fabulous in itself, it truly is a very unique city, but during Carnevale the city comes to a bright and energetic life that only is seen at this time.

A New Year, A New Challenge

My 52 week photography challenge

This year I have several goals in mind for my photography and my business. One of those goals for this year is doing a 52 week photography challenge. Encouraged by a local group of photographers who are doing this year long challenge, I decided this would be a great idea to push myself to be more creative this year. So every week in 2015 I will be doing a new photo and posting it to the world. I will be sharing them on my facebook page and other social media. I will be also creating a page with these images on my website […]

A Trip to Marksburg Castle

Look Up at Marksburg Castle

One of things I love about traveling around Germany is visiting all the castles. I call it "castle hunting". I am determined to see as many castles as I can while I am here in Germany. After doing some research, I found Marksburg Castle on list to visit not too far from Frankfurt. I found their website and planned out a day trip with a friend. This amazing castle was very worth the visit.

A Bit of Macro Fun

A little while ago a fellow photographer friend of mine showed me how fun macro photography can be. She showed me some tips on how I can really have some fun with it. So as I have been traveling around and out and about with my camera, I have been exploring macro photography with several subjects. It has been fun exploring the world around me in this different light.

I have really grown to love this type of photography. It gives me a way to focus on details and create new images out ordinary subjects that can […]

Instagram: Trying New Things

So we are in a world where the internet is part of our everyday life. Since this is the case, it also means social media is part of our everyday lives as well. I have delved deeply into Facebook, swam into Flickr, and tiptoed into Twitter. My newest social media dive is into Instagram. I was one of those people who scoffed at everyone's pseudo antiqued photos with added filters of relatively boring subjects. So from that one can assume that I was not interested in it at all. Well now that it has come out of it's infancy and a […]

Lighting and Posing Class

Recently I had the chance to teach some studio techniques to some photographers. Using my strobe studio lighting, I demonstrated the differences between one light vs. two can change how dramatic the lighting can get. Also, in where the light hits the subject can change it as well. We discussed how posing works with lighting and how using the two together can change the mood. The smallest details can completely change how we read a person in a photograph.

Colors, background choice, posing, and lighting choices can all affect how a photograph can be read. Understanding these methods can really improve […]

One Step to Improve Your Phone Photos

Ever since the invention of the cell phone with a camera, the amount of photos taken every day have jumped higher and higher. It has made almost everybody an amateur photographer, almost even a hobbyist.

Unlike other articles on improving your mobile phone photos, I am not going to talk to about composition or quality.  One thing I have been noticing is this "fog" over many mobile photos posted on social media.

Most of us are handling our phone all the time. We are texting, emailing, and posting, we are putting the phone in and out of our pocket and […]

From a Poppy’s View

As artists and photographers we are constantly changing how we see things. I find that when I am photographing I try to shoot objects from different angles. Sometimes using angles from even the object's point of view can have a nice composition to it. So if you are a new photographer I would encourage you to look around, walk around, and bend down to get as many different angles as you can so that you can create intriguing and interesting compositions for your art.

Spring in Germany

Spring in the German countryside can be a very beautiful site. Usually around April the fields of rapeseed flowers bloom and all over can be seen these beautiful fields of yellow flowers.

These fields serve more than one purpose. Besides making Germany a very picturesque country, it also can be cultivated as a crop as the rapeseed is turned into oil.

Whatever the purposes, I enjoy photographing them as much as I can. They make for great landscapes and beautiful backgrounds for portraiture.
