Well now that January is almost over I have completed 4 weeks of my 52 week photography challenge. For these first 4 weeks I have focused my attention on still life photography. With each week I have photographed an object in different styles challenging myself to do the same genre of photography but in 4 different ways.
Week 1’s photo I have already talked about in detail in my post entitled: A New Year, A New Challenge. Here I talked about this challenge in general and my photography for the first week. That style is more of an in-movement portrait-esque photo of a puppet.
Week 2’s photo I photographed a little ceramic German Weinhaus that houses a candle light. In this style of still life I utilized the light inside and out of the house as well as a glass table to add a reflection. The light and the reflection gives it a life like quality but also adds more detail of the house into the photo.
Week 3’s photo I really wanted to photograph this object up close and personal. This style I believe really brings you into the photograph and makes you feel like you are part of it. I photographed a little statuette of a photographer photographing a model. It was fun to make a close up of what looks like a close up type photography set up. I also used indirect sunlight to photograph it so it furthered my life like quality in this one.
Week 4’s photo I wanted to completely change the look of the still life photo in this one by doing a completely different style than the others, so I chose to do a silhouette. Using the studio light itself to not only back light the object, it’s shape also lends to the story of the photograph by imitating the moon. I took a play on a line from a nursery rhyme and photographed my bull statue (that I got in Spain) and did the silhouette to make it look like it was jumping or floating in front a moon.
I am very happy with my photos and that I completed the first 4 weeks of this project and am excited to keep this going. Keep following my blog for updates of this challenge that will go on the whole year. I encourage anybody to challenge themselves creatively and to do something like this that makes you stretch your mind to try different things.
